Madrid

Business Travel: A Guide to Madrid

Madrid has bounced back from the global recession admirably, although even in the hard times it remained a popular place to do business – with a diverse range of industries from fashion and textiles to finance, telecommunications and oil and gas. Its affordability and infrastructure also contribute to its success as an international meeting place and it’s fourth in the world for hosting global commercial events.

Apart from the weather (which is a major plus in my books!) and its casual, cosmopolitan ambience, there are plenty of reasons I enjoy my corporate travel to this wonderful city. It’s still work, but not as I usually know it! I’ve gleaned some helpful information along the way, which I’m delighted to share.

Düsseldorf

Business Travel: A Guide to Düsseldorf

A city of expansive innovation and growth, Düsseldorf has gained a reputation as a centre of industry, highly popular with start-ups and high-profile fashion, media and communication brands.

I attend events in the city several times a year and I’ve found it to be an easy and progressive place in which to do business. There’s a large international community and it’s particularly well facilitated for corporate travellers and delegates with the vast Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre.

I’ve complied some information from my personal experience, which I hope will give any corporate newbie a useful heads-up.

Business Travel: A Guide to Lisbon

Apart from its obvious charms – great weather, beautiful architecture and fascinating history – Portugal’s capital is emerging from the economic downturn of recent years as somewhat of a creative force. In fact, the hip, creative industries springing up all over the city are part of a government initiative, and this mini-Renaissance is, in part, responsible for an upsurge in the appeal of the city as a corporate destination.

I absolutely love coming to Lisbon. The city has a very cool, positive vibe with a focus on innovation and new technologies. All in all it’s pretty inspiring, so if you do find yourself heading there on business I hope my tips are helpful.

Business Travel: A Guide to Cologne

With both tourism and corporate traveller numbers on the increase, Cologne has really risen to the challenge in the past decade. As one of Germany’s largest cities it’s an important centre of trade, including the motor industry, banking and science research. Today, alongside its reputation as a major cultural hub, it’s also attracting many conventions and international events.

From my many visits, I’ve accumulated a number of useful tips that can only come from personal experience.

Business Travel: A Guide to Bologna

Playing host to a number of high profile trade fairs and events each year, the Italian city of Bologna is no stranger to business travellers. It’s also home to a large proportion of small and medium sized industries, so it’s definitely geared up to its regular influx of corporate visitors.

Business Travel: A Guide to Stockholm

One of Europe’s most picturesque capitals, Stockholm is also known as the start up capital of Europe. As a vital and progressive hub of information and innovation (it’s the birthplace of Skype and Spotify, just to name two), the Swedish capital has rapidly evolved into one of the global leaders in technology – second only to Silicon Valley. When added to its thriving manufacturing industry (think Ikea, Volvo and Ericsson for a start), Stockholm has become a popular destination for international business travellers.

This Nordic city is among my favourite places to do business and, in the numerous times I’ve visited, I’ve been impressed with the infrastructure and the seemingly effortless way it manages to cater equally well to tourists and corporate travellers.

Business Travel: A Guide to Paris

At just a hop, skip and a jump across the Channel, for UK residents doing business in Paris is as commonplace as heading to our own northern cities, if not more so. It boasts the world’s highest concentration of global conglomerates and regularly hosts high profile technology, manufacturing and economic summits and conferences.

I often travel to the French capital for meetings and I don’t think there are too many train, plane or automobile modes of transport I haven’t used to get me there, or any meeting room from La Dèfense to the Champs Elysees that I haven’t been in! Of course I may be exaggerating somewhat, but I certainly have gained a lot of valuable insider tips from my many years of travelling to the city, so allow me to share a few.

Business Travel: A Guide to Hannover

Hannover is renowned the world over as global force in technology, insurance and the manufacturing of everything from cosmetics to cars. Many of the major brands have a presence in the city and, as one of Europe’s most significant economic regions, it’s a popular destination for international conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions.

Business Travel: A Guide to Birmingham

As the largest city in the UK after London, Birmingham has a long history as a centre of manufacturing, technology and economic development, dating back to the Industrial Revolution. Today it’s a vibrant, cutting edge city that’s home to a host of multi-national corporations, with its finger firmly on the global financial pulse.

I’ve lost count of the number times I’ve travelled to Birmingham for business, so you can take it as read that these tips come from a source that, while not quite a genuine Brummie, is nonetheless pretty experienced.

Mailand

Business Travel: A Guide to Milan

Home to Italy’s Stock Exchange and the heart of the country’s design and fashion industries, when it comes to doing business all roads might well lead to Milan, not Rome. The city’s gaze is focused firmly on the future and, with an excellent infrastructure and healthy economy, there are suggestions that post-Brexit it may rival London as a European centre of business.

larly travel to Milan so I’ve compiled a few tips for corporate travellers. And I have to say, even though it’s usually work, I’m always a little bit sorry to leave…

Berlin

Business Travel: A Guide to Berlin

Due to the nature of my job there aren’t many cities in Europe I haven’t visited for business or leisure; so it means a lot when I say Berlin is probably in my top five. While you definitely get the vibe of the city as a serious start-up and technology hub, it’s also got a very open culture of communication that’s evident even at the highest corporate levels.

But the most refreshing thing about Berlin is that when it’s pens down there’s a very cool, creative undercurrent that can make a work trip seem just that little more like play.

München

Business Travel: A Guide to Munich

Munich is one of Europe’s undisputed business powerhouses and is home to the headquarters of some of the world’s largest finance, media, publishing and manufacturing corporations. If you find yourself in Budapest on a business itinerary, these highlights I’ve discovered along the way might make your life easier.
