In the south-eastern French Alps lies the stunning ski-resort village of Megève. Though mostly recognised for its ski-scene, the village is remarkably abundant with historical treasures and has an intriguing heritage. Rich History
Before skiing was introduced to the area, Megève was abundant with farmer’s markets and stone houses. Much of this ancient heritage can still be seen today; the church of St John the Baptist that stands tall in the village square dates back to the thirteenth century.
The resort slowly became popular over the centuries, and tourists would visit purely for the picturesque mountain views. It was in 1913 however, that skiing took over and attracted many more travellers. As its popularity continued to grow, Megève hosted its first skiing competition in 1914, and in 1933 installed its first cable car. From there, the village enjoyed its rapid rise to fame, and is now a well-known resort for winter sports fanatics as well as culture lovers. It’s distinct medieval character remains, but with a subtle modern touch; it’s no wonder Megève is so popular!

Musée de Megève

The Calvary Trail
For those who have an interest in architecture, this fascinating trail is ideal. Walk up the lower slopes of Mont d’Arbois, passing 15 chapels and oratories on the way that were all built between 1840 and 1878. Interestingly, the chapels mark the Stations of the Cross – a representation of the route taken by Jesus to his crucifixion. Each chapel has a distinct style and offers picturesque mountain views – this makes a lovely romantic stroll.

Tour the Historic Centre
Visitors to Megève can enjoy guided tours of the historic village centre. Learn about the smaller chapels located in the hamlets, the development of the area from its earliest beginnings and traditional life on the farms. Some tours also include visits to the old washhouses and barns, giving a real insight into traditional ways of life.

This museum is located in a traditional farmhouse and allows visitors to learn about the ancient lives of the villagers. How to Get There
If you’re travelling to Megève from the UK, I would recommend flying into Geneva Airport. There are usually a good number of flights to choose from as there are over 180 scheduled every week and four airlines offering direct flights.
Once you land, it is best to have a shuttle service pre-booked to take you to your destination. Doing this allows you to avoid any taxi or public transport queues, meaning your transfer to Megève should take just over an hour.
