A Festive Feast at the Christmas Markets in Germany

Nothing beats a seasonal snack at the Christmas markets in Germany. Here are some local favourites that will get you in the festive spirit.

There’s no better time to visit Germany than when the colourful Christmas markets are dominating the streets! From late November until December, the country comes alive with lights, music, festive cheer and delightful yuletide treats. If you’re heading to this foodie winter wonderland, here are some specialities you won’t want to miss.

To Eat

As well as handmade decorations, winter accessories and various other knick-knacks, the Christmas markets in Germany are always abundant with food stalls. Whether you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth or warm your belly with a hearty meal, you’ll never be far from a delicious festive treat.

  • Waffles – Sweet waffles are a local classic at Christmastime, so don’t be surprised if there’s a long queue outside the stall! Usually topped with icing sugar or hot cherries, you’re sure to enjoy this delicious dish. More modern toppings include Nutella or white chocolate drizzle.
  • Roasted Chestnuts – Probably the healthiest snack you’ll find at the markets, roasted chestnuts are quite a popular treat in Germany and are enjoyed by many visitors. Vendors continuously make fresh batches all day long, and the pleasant nutty scent fills the streets wherever you go.
  • Potato Pancakes – A local favourite, potato pancakes (reibekuchen) are made by combining grated potatoes with onions, eggs, flour and salt before the mixture is fried in a pan of oil. This dish is usually served with apple sauce.

To Drink

Festive dining at the markets would be incomplete without a warm beverage. Here are some favourites you’re sure to come across as you browse the stalls.

  • Mulled Wine – If this doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit, nothing will! Mulled wine (glühwein) is a much-loved drink all over the world, and usually infused with cinnamon, orange slices, cardamom and star anise.
  • Hot Chocolate – If you’re not into alcohol, a classic hot chocolate is the perfect alternative. It’s sweet, warm and chocolatey, so what’s not to love? Some markets also serve an alcoholic variation – hot chocolate with a shot of rum!

’Tis the season to indulge! Head to Germany this December for a holiday you’ll never forget – you’ll struggle to find a country more Christmassy.
