A Day at the Museums of Lloret de Mar

If you’re planning a visit to Lloret de Mar, on Spain’s Costa Brava, chances are you’re hoping to spend a lot of your time enjoying the beautiful beaches and crystalline ocean, dining on delicious local food, and generally making the most of the wonderful ambience of this popular Spanish coastal gem.

Come for the Sun, Stay for the Culture

Lloret’s appeal seems almost universal as an attractive place for families, youthful sunseekers and party-goers, but it also packs a punch for anyone looking to explore a little more on the cultural and historical side – along with a healthy serving of fun in the sun, of course!

One of the best ways of getting a deeper insight into the local heritage is by visiting a well-curated museum, which not only houses a collection of items and artefacts, but also provides a historical commentary. Visiting any or all of these three museums will make your exploration of the area even more satisfying.

The Maritime Museum

With a long and storied maritime heritage, Lloret de Mar’s municipality is rightfully proud of this fascinating museum detailing the town’s relationship with the sea over the centuries. Housed within an historical house called Can Garriga (in itself of great cultural importance), the collection is set over three generous levels. The curation of the museum is well-considered and spans five sections: Sons of the sea, Mediterranean, Gateway to the ocean, Lloret after sailing ships, and Beyond the beach. It’s a good idea to explore the collections of naval models and other related items in chronological order, to get an idea of the scope and importance of the town’s indelible links with the ocean and its trade. Set aside around two hours if you really want to delve deep.

Can Saragossa

A museum with a difference, Can Saragossa is an old farmhouse dating back to 1317, originally built by the Saragossa farming family of the area. Throughout its life it’s been a home, a hotel and now, since 1984, a museum devoted to Iberian history and archaeological artefacts. While the collection is impressive, with images and displays of excavation sites of ancient settlements around the local area, the building itself is a bastion of history – and a vital part of the story. Immaculately preserved, its beautiful mosaic floors, elegant shutters, intricate architectural features, and beautiful woodland and garden surrounds offer a tantalising glimpse into the past centuries.

Can Font

Can Font is a stately home, built in the Catalan modernist style in 1877 by master builder Fèlix Torras i Mataró. It claimed the title of the tallest house in the town (it comprises four levels including a basement and an attic). For anyone with an interest in architecture, this is your must-see highlight. Entering through the building’s neo-Classical facade, the central staircase leads you on a journey through the different levels, connected by interiors rich with detail. Frescos, ceramics, paving stones, traditional plasterwork, sgraffito, wrought iron, stained glass and beautiful woodwork make up the incredible craftsmanship of this magnificent home. A guided tour is highly recommended.
