Culture, Nature and More in Perfect Paphos

If you’re a culture vulture looking to explore somewhere new and exciting, look no further than the beautiful city of Paphos in Cyprus. Not only is there an enviable climate, there’s also plenty to see and do, including several historical hot spots and areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you’re feeling intrigued, simply read on and discover the amazing attractions on offer in this unique holiday destination.

Visit the Archaeological Museum

Those who enjoy learning about the past will be in their element here – this museum in Paphos is the perfect place for a historical day trip as it boasts numerous interesting artefacts excavated from as many as 15 archaeological sites.

The museum documents the life of the locals in western Cyprus from the Neolithic age all the way to the late eighteenth century. Some of the artefacts on display were dug up from ancient settlements and are so well preserved that they are able to give a real insight into the vast history of the country.

Admire the ancient coins, marble sculptures from the Roman era and so much more – you’ll easily spend an entire day wandering through the many rooms of this museum.

Explore the Medieval Castle

If the museum wasn’t enough, a visit to this small medieval castle will be sure to provide you with a sufficient history fix on your Paphos holiday. This hidden gem of Cyprus may be small in size, but is certainly rich in history.

While today it serves as a cultural landmark, the building was a prison and salt warehouse for several hundred years. The fortress makes for a great day trip and has impressive views over the surrounding landscapes – a must for history or nature lovers.

Hike Up the Troodos Mountains

For a slight change of scenery, a hike up the Troodos Mountains is the ideal option. Slather on some sun cream, take plenty of water and prepare for some truly breath-taking views over the coastline, verdant vineyards and quaint villages.

While you wander over the mountains, you may be lucky enough to come across some Byzantine churches and monasteries, some boasting beautifully painted murals inside. Why not take a picnic along and enjoy a bite to eat on the sunny mountainside?

Visit Kato Paphos Archaeology Park

If you’re spending a day near the harbour, you can’t miss a trip to this great historical treasure trove. There are several incredible structures to see here, with the most impressive dating back to the Roman era – the ruins of four villas. The villas boast amazingly detailed mosaics, so well preserved that they still hold the details of stories from Roman mythology.

At this archaeology park you’ll also find an ancient arena, now used as a performance venue by the locals. This arena has been named the Ancient Odeon and offers a great opportunity for photographs.

Go Horseback Riding

Experience the natural beauty of Cyprus in a different way by trekking around the landscape on horseback. This option gives you the chance to enjoy a close encounter with wildlife as well as a great exploration of the wilderness – the ideal day out for a nature lover.

Where to Stay

Capital Coast Resort and Spa – This resort is the ideal option for travellers looking for style and sophistication. Boasting large pools, beautifully furnished rooms, a spa and a golf course, you’ll be living in the lap of luxury during your holiday to Cyprus.

Louis Ivi Mare – The stunning, modern design of this hotel sets it apart from the rest. Cool, neutral colours are used throughout each room to create a calming ambience, and the spacious outdoor eating areas ensure that ‘dinner with a view’ is achieved each and every night.

How to Get There

The best way to travel to Paphos is by flying to Paphos Airport. A flight from London will take around 4 hours and 20 minutes, and there are plenty of airlines offering direct flights. Once you reach the airport, I would recommend taking a pre-booked shuttle transfer to your accommodation. A transfer from Shuttle Direct will take you to your destination in as little as 20 minutes, so it’s well worth booking beforehand to avoid public transport queues.
