Looking to escape the doom and gloom for a fun-filled, action-packed winter sun holiday? Playa de las Américas should be the top of your list, as this is a brilliant party destination on the Canary Island of Tenerife. The sun blasts down during the day when you can enjoy plenty of thrilling activities or chill out on the beach, before hitting the town for a wild night at one of the many pubs, bars and clubs where the drinks flow and the prices are low.
This is a popular winter sun destination as you can enjoy temperatures of around 20 degrees even in the middle of winter, so ditch your thick jumpers and remember to pack your swimming gear. Not just this, but you can also take advantage of the many great deals at this time of the year where you can find cheap flights and accommodation with ease.
Nightlife
The nightlife in Playa de las Américas is world famous and attracts party animals from every corner of the world – this creates an incredible atmosphere once the sun goes down.
Whether you are looking to drink and dance until the early hours in a club, spend an entire evening in a cool bar or have a chilled out drink at a pub – you are spoilt for choice in Playa de las Américas.
There are three main districts for nightlife: Starco’s, Veronica’s Strip and The Patch. Starco’s is a commercial centre about 300 metres inland and it is typically where people kick-off their night due to the enormous range of bars to choose from. Later in the evening most people stumble down to Veronica’s Strip; this is a seafront strip that is lined with lively clubs. The neon signs, thumping music and people having the time of their lives – it all contributes to an incredible buzz that any night owl will love. The Patch is slightly quieter and often attracts an older crowd; this makes this area a better option for a quiet drink.
Unsure where to head? Follow this itinerary for an unforgettable night!
You will be amazed at the fantastic drink deals that you find at each venue, so you should be able to have a fun-filled evening without paying through the teeth.
Outdoor Activities
During the day, you will want to spend your time enjoying the many superb outdoor activities on offer (provided your hangover isn’t too bad). Winter is the perfect time to do this in Tenerife as the weather is not sweltering, but still very warm and pleasant.
If you are up to the challenge, hiking the Mount Teide is an incredible and very rewarding experience. The reward? Experiencing the breathtaking views from the highest point in all of Spain and the third largest volcano in the entire world.
Just outside of Playa de las Américas there is also a brilliant water park, which is also a must visit for fun lovers. Aqualand has plenty to keep you and your mates entertained for a day with dozens of thrilling slides, chill out areas and even their own fantastic dolphin shows.
Adrenaline junkies will want to head to Siam Park; this is a popular theme park that has many great rides, an artificial beach complete with the world’s biggest artificial waves (up to 3 metres!) and a cool beach club.
Winter Sunbathing
As such a big party destination, it is more than likely that you won’t want to spend every day engaging in physical activities and riding rides. For these times, you will want to sweat the booze out with some winter sunbathing.
Playa de las Américas has many stunning beaches where you can soak up some sun and enjoy the amazing views. As the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees during the winter, the crystal blue water is perfect for chilling out in, snorkelling or playing water sports with mates.
How to Get to Playa de las Américas
Tenerife is just a 4-hour flight from the UK, which means that you do not have to spend a large chunk of your break travelling and you’ll be partying hard within no time at all.
There are airports to the north and south of the island, so you will ideally want to fly into Tenerife South as this is just a 15-minute drive from Playa de las Américas. Tenerife South also has more regular flights, with Thomson Airways, British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and Monarch Airlines all servicing this airport. If you are only able to get a flight into Tenerife North, it will still only take you about an hour by road to reach your destination.
No matter which airport you fly into, you will want a quick and easy way to reach your hotel. A shared or bus transfer with Shuttle Direct will be the best way to do this – and it could be a great way to make new friends along the way as well!
