Keep reading for more on this picturesque French retreat, plus some great options for dining and other activities.

A Rich History

Dating back to the nineteenth century, this traditional French village is a perfect destination for visiting the Haute-Savoie region. Originally a farming town, Megève derives its name from the Celtic phrase meaning ‘the village on water.’ A ski competition in 1914 put this tiny town on the map and later, the Rothschild family brought growth and development to the farming community. The first (and famous!) red cable car arrived on the slopes in 1933, signalling the beginning of a new era.

Today, visitors to the town can explore the old city centre, which dates back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The village’s church still has a door from 1692, and many old houses constructed of stone still dot the city, reminding travellers of the area’s long history.

Plentiful Dining Options

Megève still holds on to its farming roots, with over 45 local farms that provide fresh meats, dairy and plants to the 89 dining locations in the area. Gourmands, this is the place for you, as there are three Michelin-star rated restaurants among the selection. If you fancy cooking for yourself, you can stop by the Friday morning markets to select some of the finest local specialities on display in the many stalls.

Family Activities

Given its reputation as a world-class ski resort, Megève is the place to go for winter sporting options. Families can have fun together while enjoying sledging, taking a ride on a sleigh pulled by dogs or skiing. Indoor options include climbing, swimming and relaxing family yoga sessions.

Take to the Alpine hills with the plenty of skiing, hiking and other options for wintery fun. Ski schools offer private and group lessons for all experience levels and equipment is available for rental as well. Don’t forget to pack all your gloves, scarves and other winter essentials to bundle up on the frosty hills!

The chalet’s rooms are decorated with rustic cabin-inspired accents and complete with private bathrooms and tea and coffee machines, while the bar serves a selection of wine, beer and spirits.

Hotel Mont Blanc Bonjour dream hotel! This truly luxurious hotel is located within walking distance of the city centre’s famous church. Hotel Mont Blanc has high praise, being named one of the finest resorts in the world, and it definitely lives up to that title. With a tea room that becomes a champagne bar at night, a restaurant serving traditional lunch and dinner and an indoor pool and hot tub, this opulent destination will be your favourite part of your trip.

How to Get There

Though the snow-covered mountains of Megève may seem like a world away from the UK, it’s a short plane and car trip to get to this stunning location. Plan on flying from London to Geneva, the closest airport to Megève. Once you’re there, you can hire a shuttle service to take you and your family the rest of the way.

I recommend Shuttle Direct for your Geneva airport transfer, since their services can be booked in advance and make travelling to and from the airport a breeze. If you order your Geneva airport transfer before you travel, all you have to do is show up at the airport and enjoy the ride to your accommodation.
