Tucked away in the northern reaches of Mallorca is the lovely town of Puerto Pollensa. Even though many people may not have heard of it, it’s one of the most pleasant places on the island to visit. When holidaymakers do discover it, they tend to return year after year. Not only are the views to die for, with gorgeous seascapes and mountain vistas, the cultural life of the town is also worth a look and there’s a welcome lack of modern high-rises.
There are plenty of authentic Balearic and traditional Spanish restaurants offering some of the best cuisine in the region, as well as plenty to cater to other tastes, as well. Nightlife is exciting without being over-the-top, and there are lots of places to while away a lazy afternoon in the sun. Historically, the port town was a military base during the Franco era, and has since enjoyed beautification from residents and developers who have improved the area around the picturesque bay.
It really is a place that needs to be experienced for yourself in order to get a full picture, but one of the most interesting things is how it perfectly balances its cultural side with the opportunities for indulgent relaxation. Below, we’ve outlined just how you might want to spend a day so you can really make the most of both sides of its brilliant personality.
A Morning of Culture
To make the most out of your morning, get up early and head over to Pollensa for some breakfast before your day of cultural delicacies. This is the ‘old town’ of the area and is only a short hop inland from the main town.
When you arrive and begin walking around you’ll immediately feel as though you’ve finally arrived in the heart of the Balearic Islands – as this is truly an archetypal example of what these places are like. It’ll be just as you dreamed it, only warmer, brighter and even better!
A Sight to Behold
There’s plenty to do to whet your cultural appetite and one of the highlights is the Calvari, which takes you up almost four hundred steps to the top of a tree-lined hill to a captivating chapel from the 1700s. The views are phenomenal, and you’ll enjoy the architecture, the history and the absolute tranquillity of this beautiful spot.
Museums and Galleries
The cultural offerings continue with a visit to the Museu de Pollensa, where you can enjoy a range of artefacts that include seventeenth century architecture, pottery and a host of contemporary art. The town also benefits from having the museum housed in a picture-perfect building, which is a pleasure to enjoy in its own right. Another great museum is the Casa-Museu Dionis Bennassar. This was the home of a local artist, the late Dionis Bennassar, and his works are on display throughout the building. It’s a relaxing and informative way to enjoy a taste of life in the town from an artistic perspective.
An Afternoon Relaxing
What better way is there to relax in Mallorca than with a trip to the beach? (Other than perhaps adding in a cold beer or a cocktail at a beachside bar!) Thankfully, Puerto Pollensa has you covered when it comes to sandy places to soak up the ambience and sunshine. Here are some of the best:
Puerto Pollensa Beach
The beach in the main town itself is a great place to start; it’s a very welcome location for those days when you’ve exhausted yourself with the cultural life of the town and want to relax somewhere near your accommodation. It’s walking distance from many hotels and villas, as well as being close to bars and restaurants.
Bahía de Alcudia
In the nearby town of Alcudia is this gorgeous beach, which is blessed with crystal blue water, swaying palm trees, and a backdrop of a few small mountains. It’s great for anyone looking to take part in some water sports, but it’s also ideal if you just want to lie around and do very little!
Cala de Sa Calobra
This beach has perhaps the most dramatic view of all – worthy of any postcard. Walled in by two enormous rock faces, the small beachfront seems a world away from the rest of the island. It’s well worthwhile a visit and is a place you won’t forget in a hurry.
Where to Stay
You really are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation in Puerto Pollensa, and each part of the town will offer something a little different. Here are three that will get the approval of even the most discerning guest:
Hosposa Daina is a fantastic, adults-only beachside hotel with a spectacular pool for guests to unwind and enjoy the sun. It’s home to a lovely onsite café and bar, which serves tasty food and drinks.
MarSenses Puerto Pollensa is another great option for adults looking for class, relaxation and refinement. With a short walk to the beach, the views from this hotel are wonderful. The hotel is stylish and elegant, and is close to local bars and restaurants. There are also spa facilities onsite.
Fabuloso Apartamento is a very smart apartment less than 150 yards from the beach. With three bedrooms and a great balcony to soak up the sun from, this is a brilliant place for small groups of friends to enjoy a break.
How to Get There
Flying into Palma de Mallorca from the UK couldn’t be much easier. A number of budget carriers go there including Wizz, Ryanair and Jet2, as well as British Airways, Lufthansa and a number of other airlines. The journey time is around 2 and a half hours. Flights go from most major UK airports, including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. To save on the hassle of taking a taxi, I highly recommend using a pre-booked shuttle to get to your accommodation in Puerto Pollensa – it makes your flight that much more enjoyable knowing all the complications are taken out of the final leg of your journey.
