DAY ONE: Explore the Old Town
With its storied past written everywhere throughout its cobblestoned streets, Catalan architecture and the lively local culture of the people, the historic city centre is definitely the first place to start. San Francesco is another notable church, as well as St Michael and St Barbara – all of which are worthwhile having a look around inside.
There are plenty of places in town to stop for a spot of lunch or an aperitivo. As you walk the walls, keep an eye out for an area known as Bastioni Marco Polo, where you’ll be able to take your pick of many fantastic restaurants, or head to Piazza Civica.
DAY TWO: Head to the Beach
After a day spent soaking up all that history and culture, on day two you might want to relax and take advantage of the stunning beaches on offer – after all, Sardinia is an island! Alghero offers an ideal mix of vibrant, popular beaches and tiny tucked away coves where you might not see another soul. Depending on your mood, these are some you might choose.
Punta Negra: This is a lovely place to come and relax, but it’s still close to amenities. Situated near Fertilia, it’s very easy to get to.
Mugoni: This is one of the largest and best-facilitated beaches in the area. It’s popular with locals and families, and the clear, shallow waters make a great place to try out some watersports.
Cala Dragunara: Located at the foot of a cliff, this lovely sandy beach is small, safe and even has a kiosk and bar. It’s also the place from which to explore the interesting Neptune Caves.
These three beaches are just a small taste of the ones in the area – so if you’re feeling adventurous, jump in the car and get out and explore and you’ll no doubt find your own favourites.
DAY THREE: Museum and Shopping
On the final day of your itinerary, it would be remiss not to explore what the town has to offer in terms of shopping and its well-known museum.
Alghero is located along what’s known as the Coral Riviera, so visiting the Coral Museum, to learn about the city’s main natural product, is absolutely fascinating. Set within a gorgeous Art Deco building, the beautifully curated museum features many displays of coral – both in its natural form and in works of art by local craftsmen – along with information about its economic and cultural importance to the area.
You might be surprised at the quality and quantity of shopping at your disposal here! As the main hub for the region, there are plenty of excellent shops and boutiques selling jewellery featuring the stunning local coral, designer clothing, shoes and quirky souvenirs.
