If you’ve heard of Tenerife, you’ve probably heard of Los Cristianos. This bustling, vibrant resort is one of the island’s most popular, particularly with beach lovers – because, well, there’s a lot to love. The gorgeous stretches of sand that once defined a tiny fishing village now attract sun-worshippers from all over the world.
If you’re heading to Los Cristianos, chances are you’re going to spend a LOT of time on one or other of the surrounding beaches – and if you’re not yet a fan of water sports, this is definitely the place to become one.
We’ve rounded up our top five suggestions for water sports we think you should try – so dive in!
Five Wet & Wild Water Sports to Try in Los Cristianos!
Jet Skiing
If you really want to put the ‘wild’ into wet and wild water sports, jet skiing is the way to do it. But you don’t just have to pootle around the beach, like some other resorts; in Los Cristianos you can book on to a small group tour and explore the south coast of Tenerife in a very different way. You’ll have full instruction from a professional guide, then for 1-2 hours, you’ll set off on a genuine adventure with the wind in your hair and the salt-spray on your face. What a way to view the scenery!
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Otherwise known as SUP (by those in the know), stand up paddleboarding can be tricky, but if you sign up for a lesson with a qualified instructor, you can learn the basics in as little as two hours then be off on your own to explore the beautiful coastline. There’s no doubt it takes a bit of practice to perfect this art of balance and skill, but once you do, it’s highly addictive. One of the best things about it is the near-silence as you slice your oar through the water and move across the surface under your own steam.
Kayaking
Heading out into the ocean in a one-person sea kayak is nothing short of exhilarating. You don’t need any experience, as you’ll be fully instructed by a professional guide. You can choose to join a small group, or book a private safari, and you’ll get to encounter the local marine life (including playful sea turtles) and view the scenery of the coastline around Los Cristianos at a very leisurely pace. Some tours even allow for the option of snorkelling, too.
Snorkelling
This is something you can do entirely off your own back without needing to join a tour or have an instructor – although, as mentioned above, it’s a great add-on to a kayaking tour. Strap on a snorkel and some flippers (which can be rented if you don’t have your own) and head out into the shallows to meet some of the curious local marine life. Snorkelling is a fantastic activity for kids and adults and you can be as tame or adventurous as you like.
Diving
If you really want to make the most of the underwater world that surrounds Tenerife, and you’ve always said, ‘one day’ you’ll learn to dive, make that day in Los Cristianos. You can sign up to a private scuba diving course and enjoy a truly unforgettable experience, with full instruction and two dives over the day. (You’ll achieve your DSD certification.) Scuba diving is the ultimate underwater adventure and, once tried, you’ll want to do it again, and again, and again…
