3 Days, 3 Attractions for a Short Break In Playa Blanca

It’s calmer and quieter than nearby holiday resorts, it’s sophisticated, and it’s surrounded by stunning landscapes – sound like an ideal destination for your next holiday? Welcome to Playa Blanca! Situated on the southern coast of Lanzarote, it boasts luxurious modern accommodation, a picturesque promenade, and a thriving marina and leisure complex, alongside a rich prehistoric culture. You might even say this is a place that “has it all”!

From Ancient Fishing Village to Modern Resort

For a long time, Playa Blanca was simply a small fishing village with a busy port. However, a couple of decades ago, major development saw it undergo a complete transformation into a modern holiday gem. Pleasingly, however, its ingrained culture and traditions still remain. It is one of Spain’s most coveted holiday destinations, yet despite all the development, it remains laid back and friendly – with plenty of things to see and do. While it is relatively built-up, the gorgeous beaches are the perfect complement. You can enjoy the delights of swimming and sunbathing in the calmer waters ofBeach; soak up the rays from a sunlounger on the sands of Playa Dorada, a.k.a. “Golden Beach”; or, for a less crowded experience, take in the views and waters of Montana Roja Beach.

But Playa Blanca has many more attractions besides the beach. If you’ve got three days, slot these three highlights into your itinerary in between your fun in the sun and get to know the area a little better.

Visit the Pechiguera Lighthouse

The first Pechiguera Lighthouse was constructed in 1866 in support of the burgeoning maritime trade, to help provide easy navigation between Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the rest of the Canary Islands. While the original lighthouse was just 10 metres high, in 1986 a new lighthouse (at a height of 50 metres) was constructed behind it, and remains active today. Not only is it of great importance to the local area, it has also become a wonderful tourist attraction and a fantastic site to take in the surrounding views.

To get there, you can either drive, or navigate on foot along the promenade walk – the latter is highly recommended. From Marina Rubicon, set off along the coastline and, as you walk, you’ll get fantastic views of the local beaches, including Playa Dorada. You can stop along the way for a relaxing drink, or stay longer for a bite to eat at various restaurants and bars.

While you won’t have internal access to the old or new lighthouse structures, it’s a pleasure to just wander around the site enjoying the history and the spectacular views. It’s an incredibly photogenic place, so don’t forget your camera – particularly if you can arrange to be there at sunset, when the views are truly iconic.

Explore Los Hervideros Caves

You haven’t seen the best of the area if you don’t visit the fascinating Los Hervideros Caves. Los Hervideros, meaning “the boiling pots,” provides an opportunity to immerse in the beauty and intrigue of this amazing natural landscape. These unusual geological features were formed by volcanic eruptions, with the “boiling” action of seawater as it hits the cliffs giving them their name. (The ferocity of the water is heightened during high tide.)

There are networked walkways that allow you to explore the surrounding area and take in the scenery, which offers striking visuals of the contrasting colours of the volcanic rocks and water. But for the best place to witness the mesmerising action of the waters, head to the viewing platforms and watch as the waters pound the rocks, creating the “boiling” bubbles.

Take a day trip to Yaiza

Yaiza, a village deeply rooted in culture, still upholds its historic beauty, from its architecture to its iconic landmarks. Located on the southern coast of Lanzarote, just 10 minutes by road from Playa Blanca, this small village sits in the volcanic crater landscape of Timanfaya National Park. It has been voted the prettiest village in Spain, with its wonderfully-preserved traditional white houses a striking contrast against the black soil landscape.

A meandering stroll around the village will reveal historic buildings like the Church of Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, and gardens filled with beautiful flowers and old trees that date back to prehistoric times. On the outskirts of the village you can see the Rotonda de los Camelo (Camel Roundabout), which is an artwork decorated with sculptures of camels – a trusted mode of transport from Lanzarote’s ancient history.

From Yaiza, you can also hike out into the Timanfaya National Park to get up close and personal with the strange, otherworldly lava fields and volcanoes.
