Even with its status as the smaller of the Spanish Balearic islands, Menorca can hold its own with the big boys when it comes to great accommodation, excellent attractions and, above all, stunning beaches. Being an island, naturally Menorca will offer you plenty of beaches to choose from, but certainly not all are created equal. Some are sandy, some are rocky and some are just plain hard to get to – but then you can reap the rewards of your efforts with your very own deserted hideout. In fact, there are enough beaches on Menorca that, if you so desired, you could visit a different one every day.
If you’re staying in the gorgeous southwest coast resort of Cala’n Bosch, you’ll have plenty to choose from – but don’t be afraid to get out and explore a little farther afield as well.
Cala’n Bosch
The resort itself has the most stunning beach any visitor could hope for, with the ubiquitous white sandy shores lapped by sparking azure waters. It is a very modern resort, so the facilities around the beach are excellent, including bars and restaurants as well as a host of opportunities for water sports. Very popular with families due to the gently shelving nature of the beach, the waters are shallow and generally considered very safe. The resort accommodation is set just a short walk from the beach and there is also a buzzing marina complex with restaurants and shops.
Son Xoriguer
Just a little further up, joined to the resort of Cala’n Bosch, is the delightful Son Xoriguer beach, which also has a large range of water sports, including two sailing schools that provide lessons in sailing, wind surfing and water skiing. Around a kilometre’s walk from the main beach at Cala’n Bosch, Son Xoriguer has a very laidback feel about it. There are lots of small restaurants, cafes and a few boutiques. There is also a mini train to get you around.
Playa Binigaus
If you have a car, head along the south coast to Playa Binigaus, which is just west of Santo Tomas. It takes a little effort to get to the beach, but it’s well worth it if you’re looking for some alone time. After parking in the car park, a 15-minute walk along a well-marked track will lead you down to the gorgeous sandy shores of Binigaus. Crystal clear, shallow waters lap the wide shores where craggy cliffs come right down to meet the ocean. You can explore the fascinating cathedral caves just off the beach and enjoy views of the verdant Binigaus Valley behind.
These are just a few of the Menorca’s many wonderful south-western beaches, but there are plenty more to discover on even a short visit to Cala’n Bosch.
How to Get to Cala’n Bosch
Menorca has its own airport (also known as Mahon Airport), servicing flights from all over Europe. It is situated around 4.5 kilometres from the island’s capital, Mahon, and equidistant from Sant Luis. When flying into Menorca Airport, transfers are available to get you to your resort or villa accommodation anywhere on the island. Shuttle Direct’s services from Menorca Airport are fast, convenient and very cost-effective. Travellers can choose from either shared or private transfers, depending on their budget.
